Animal Care Fair
April 25, 2009 11am–5pm
Animal Care Fair: At the Shelter
This fun filled idea started as a volunteer awareness event for St. Helens High
School student, Ashley Osborn's Senior Project. While brainstorming ways that Ashley's volunteers could
spend the day helping around the shelter, we quickly realized not only were many things going to get
done, but we were going to have a heck of a lot of fun while doing it. And as we all know...everything
is much more fun when it's shared!
With that, Animal Care Fair was born.
We had rain, sun, wind, a lot more rain, a little more sun, lots and lots and lots of wind and yes, even hail. The last wind storm hit at 3:45pm and although we intended to run until 5pm we had to start breaking down the event as items were not living through it.
We pulled in about $555.00 during the day. We had three adoptions on our side, the county also had three and those were partially due to our fair. We had five microchipped dogs which is AWESOME so now they will be part of the 5% of animals if lost that are reunited with their family. We have some more money coming in from sales today and also upcoming from product for the event so with taking out the money it took to make this event happen we will still end up around $700.00 profit.

SPAY DAY USA
February 24, 2009
Every year 3-4 MILLION animals are put down in shelters across the
nation. The reason for this is simple and sad. There are too many animals
and not enough good homes for them. Spaying and neutering is part of
our continued effort to see that some day every dog and cat has a parent
all their own.
SPAY DAY USA is an annual campaign of The Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS) to save the lives of our pets
and improve our communities through the awesome power of
spay/neuter! Spay/neuter saves lives and money by reducing the
number of homeless animals. Spay/neuter is good for you, your pet,
and your community.
Spay Day takes place the last Tuesday of February.
This year, Spay Day USA was Tuesday, February 24, 2009.

Financial Assistance for Seniors
December, 2006 — December, 2008
There were some very exciting opportunities to help out
Seniors in Columbia County.
Medical Care for your pet
Do you need help with some of the routine medical expenses for your dog or cat?
Thanks to a generous donation from the Lura Freeman estate, we were able to help
offset the costs of routine exams, vaccinations, spay/neuters and other general
veterinary care for your beloved pets.
We teamed up with five local vets (Columbia Veterinary Clinic, Midway Veterinary
Hospital, Scappoose Animal Hospital, St. Helens Veterinary Clinic, and Valley Veterinary
Clinic) to provide this service. Anyone over 55 could request assistance with payment
for spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and possibly other requested services for their
pets.
Adopt–A–Thon
December 26–27, 2008
CHS 5th Annual Holiday Adopt-A-Thon!

Holiday Giving Trees
December, 2008

Houlton Bakery, and Starbucks in St. Helens.
There was a nice one in the shelter lobby, also, which we share with
Columbia County Animal Control.
We really appreciate the help.

We're feeling the bite of inflation and it is vital to our shelter that we raise a large sum of money at this fundraiser to keep our shelter open.

CHS Announces Board Openings
Closed August 31, 2008
CHS is pleased to announce board openings for 2009. We are looking for people with not only an interest and passion for our cause, but for people with professional backgrounds who are up to the challenge of dedicating time and effort into improving and expanding our organization. Previous experience with board governance is preferred but not necessary. We are a "working board" with no full time executive director. Terms are 3 years. General meetings are held once per month, with an additional recommended monthly committee meeting. Current committees are Board Development, Budget/Finance, Shelter Operations and Fundraising. Committees are made up of a chair person, and the majority of members are board members. All are advisory to the board unless specific authority has been delegated. Committees to which specific authority is delegated may not have non-board member members. Our current areas of focus are Governance, Major Donor Development, Setting Strategic Vision and, of course, Fundraising.

Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction
November 10, 2007
Columbia Humane Society’s silent auction and benefit dinner was
held on November 10, 2007 at the St. Helens Elks Lodge. Over the course of the evening,
guests enjoyed a tasty buffet dinner, the excitement at our gaming tables, karaoke, and
of course all the fantastic items in our silent auction.
Thanks to our generous sponsors and guests, we netted over $8,000! Without the generous
support of our community, we could not have realized this great success. It was a
wonderful time, but the best part of the evening was the knowledge that the funds raised
will make a difference for the shelter animals in our care, and will allow us to continue
to service our community members, both two-legged and four.

‘YAPPY HOUR’ is a HIT... October 12th was our howl-o-ween party and final ‘Yappy Hour’ of 2007. Pet lovers brought their furry friends in costume to Wayne's Chicago Red Hots! Prizes were awarded to scariest, cutest, best in show, and best human pooch combo. Previous ‘Yappy Hours’ have been a great success!
Plenty of dogs got baths, folks had fun socializing in the sun and we were able to raise
some desperately needed funds. Customers enjoyed a beautiful evening on the Scappoose
Bay Marina socializing with their dogs. We even adopted out one of our puppies at the event,
and his brother got adopted the next day! |
Here's a story Christy Caballero of the Longview Daily News wrote about ‘YAPPY HOUR’:

SPAY DAY USA
February 27, 2007
SPAY DAY USA is an annual campaign of The Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS) to save the lives of our pets
and improve our communities through the awesome power of
spay/neuter! Spay/neuter saves lives and money by reducing the
number of homeless animals. Spay/neuter is good for you, your pet,
and your community. This year, Spay Day USA was February 27, 2007.
During Spay Day USA, hundreds of veterinarians, humane
organizations, and concerned individuals nationwide partner to
promote and provide spay/neuter services. Since the first Spay
Day USA in 1995, caring people just like you have helped spay
or neuter an estimated 1,366,000 cats, dogs, and other animals
in honor of the program, saving potentially millions of animal
lives and tax dollars.
Support the Columbia Humane Society By 'Sponsoring A Snip'.
Columbia Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill organization
that relies solely on donations to keep open our doors. This
includes funding the spay/neuter of animals that we adopt out of
our shelter into new homes. We are asking the members of our
community to rally together to help celebrate Spay Day USA 2007
by simply sponsoring the spay or neuter of at least one of our
shelter animals awaiting adoption during the month of
February. Then, enter the 'EVERY SPAY/NEUTER COUNTS!' CONTEST
for a chance to win a fabulous prize! Please call the shelter
at (503) 397-4353 or visit at 2084 Oregon Street in St. Helens,
Oregon for more information or to sponsor one of our animals!

Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction
December 2, 2006
Thank you to all of you who donated to and participated in the
Columbia Humane Society’s silent auction and benefit dinner, held on December 2 at
the St. Helens Elks Lodge.
Guests enjoyed a tasty buffet dinner, the comedy hypnosis of Scott Kealoha, and of
course all the fantastic items in our silent auction. The silent auction featured
items to suit every taste, and was the scene of much active bidding.
Thanks to our guests and donors, we netted over $4,600! Without this generous support,
we could not have realized this great success. Everyone had a wonderful time, but the
best part of the evening was the knowledge that the funds raised will make a difference
for the shelter animals in our care, and will allow us to continue to service our
community members, both two-legged and four.
We are planning to hold this silent auction again next year and will try to increase
the number of donated items and money raised for the Columbia Humane Society.
We hope that we can count on your support for our next event.
Happy holidays!

CHS raised over $400.00 through canister donations, Spay & Neuter ribbon magnet sales, as well as 10% of all Burgerville proceeds from the sale of food and gift cards during this period.
Also throughout the month of February, any gift cards purchased at the St. Helens Burgerville can also be designated for CHS. Just let the checker know that you want your gift card purchase to support the Humane Society Partnership. We will also have our donation cannisters, pictures of adoptable animals and our display board at the restaurant all month.

5 kittens, 1 puppy and 2 dogs (both named Harley)!
Santa even made an appearance on Saturday. We also sold dog and cat
related gifts such as food, jewelry, and Christmas cards.
The Adopt–A–Thon was held at Hi–School Pharmacy

Rabies Clinics Successful
January & February, 2005

CHS Hits 100!
December 31, 2004
No, CHS has not been in business for 100 years, but we did hit an important mile post in the last two months. We adopted over 100 dogs and cats! At last count, we were up to 104 during our "Home 4 the Holidays" campaign. This started on November 8 and ran until December 31, as part of a world–wide effort to place animals in new homes. We offered special discounts and held an exciting Adopt–A–Thon early in December. This was a great success and we hope to participate again next year.
And the Winner Is...
December 31, 2004
Winners of our raffle were:
Lunch with the fire chief: Polly Rismoen
the Mossbarger Photography raffle: Diana Boom
Dog Grooming: Renee Flint
Congratulations and thanks.

Adopt–A–Thon
December 4 – 5, 2004
CHS held an Adopt–A–Thon as part of "Home 4 the Holidays" on
December 4 and 5 in the Hi–School Pharmacy parking lot. During the two days, we
adopted out 23 animals. We also sold dog and cat related material such as food,
jewelry, and Christmas cards. A Portland band, The Ditty Twisters, came
out to entertain on Saturday, the 4th, and both days volunteer Jeremy Porter
played Blitzen, board members Paul Dinu and Chuck Petersen took turns playing
Santa Claus, Wayne's Chicago Red Hots brought their van and sold food, Sunshine
Pizza and Dominoes Pizza donated pizza to the workers, several businesses and
individuals donated to the baskets we raffled and Hudson Garbage provided that
very necessary Port–a–Potty. It was cold, but everyone had a good time and it
was especially good to see so many animals leave with their new owners.
Special thanks to Cari'ssa Karol–Chik, who arranged this whole campaign. She
obtained lots of donations of material time and pulled it all together.
